In response to superior Boer artillery the people of Kimberley built a one-off field gun named after Cecil Rhodes. Construction began in December 1899 and the gun was completed in January the following year. Its barrel was made of a piece of mild steel originally from one of De Beers' machines and it fired special custom-made shells
