Perhaps the explorers reached the Americas and visited an abandoned city like Machu Pichu. The last inhabitant, an Incan priest, lived in one of the pyramids and continued performing rituals long after the rest of his tribe had died from disease

Nope General...other then what is presented in the reference links. It's highly probable that this was a nearer in shoal or barrier island that was simply misunderstand and then was destroyed by nature.
And or it is simply a case of mis-identification with another.
 
But as ya know I love the wee folks and the storiesLOL
