There are a great number of little known civil war commanders of outstanding repute...but none of them could be any greater then Eugene A. Carr. With out exception, or more appropriately phrased, other then perhaps R. Mackenzie and GA Custer.... (who never served anywhere prior to the CW) none of the Cavalry Commanders; who later served in the west.... had a better reputation imo. Some like Mackenzie, Merritt and Carr, lived up to it..others fell short.

JNO Buford the best of them all; would have done well there.. had he lived. Merritt did well but admin duties as commander of the 'fighting fifth' occupied a great deal of his time and energies (altho his forays into the field were exemplary).

As a subordinate to some of the best generals prior to.. during... and then after the CW...Carr and his legendary 5th US Cavalry were always in the thick of the fight and in great demand...all you have to do is ask  MG George Crook. Or Carr's regimental commander MG W. Merritt.

He was a tough, no nonsense professional like Mackenzie; who would ride reconn with his scouts and not fear to lead a charge personally. A Medal of Honor winner for his superb actions during the Battle of Pea Ridge Ark...he was and remains a remarkable example of tenacity and espirt de corps....dedication to duty and sense of honor. He later recieved the Colonelcy of the Sixth US Cavalry which took him from the Black Knights but our loss was their gain. Breveted General twice for service.. his were actually well earned and well merited.

Here he is... EA Carr.

RIP Sir. You are still remembered.
