Greetings from Cyprus Smile

I found this stone on our nearby beach the other day and have been wondering what it is- my first thought was fishing net weight- but then maybe its a loom weight.

The bottom corner looks as though it has been chipped off but the hole looks very defined (part on the back has been blocked up by a shelled sea creature)
I have another stone in the same type of rock that is more round and the hole looks more worn (but my camera card is full at the moment!)

This second photo is an amphora neck that I found when they dredged Paphos Harbour a couple of years ago- an archaeologist who was surveying the site of the proposed new marina dated it to 2nd C AD for me. There is a lot of archaeology just laying around here!

So- any ideas on what the first picture is showing? Any help VERY much appreciated Clap

Hmm two possibilities,

Firstly it's natural, sea mollusk can make holes in stones.

Secondly it's man made, it could have been used as a brace for starting fires using a a bow to twist a stick in or it could simply have been used as a drilling platform when drilling other objects, both are common.

Interesting - I am looking into a scholarship to take part this summer in an archaeological dig- the temple of Aphrodite. What part of Cyprus on you on? Are you Greek or Turkish? I have spent time in both Greece and Turkiye.

The first item is interesting but it is hard to tell what it is. I found a strange object in my backyard in southern Arizona and looks like it is clay. The Hohokham culture lived here and were sedentary agriculturists.
