[Sorry for posting a good 8 months after the last post, but I found this topic interesting]
 
The Civilization games are great.
 
In terms of city builders, I've always appreciated Pharoah (by Impressions Games and Sierra). Cleopatra is the newest version of the game. If you're at all interested in the Ancient Egyptians, this is great. It familiarizes you with the Gods, with the industries,  etc....

Empires; total war, it was great on all perspectives, of course the newly released Civilization V was also very good and enjoying.
