Couple of thoughts on the Battle.
Haig acted to save the French Army, he was ordered to do so.
29 Divisions took part, 29x20,000men in each div= 58,000 men on the British side in the first assualt. 20,000 died,
That is One in every 29
on D Day at Omaha One in every 10 died
75 % of soldiers who took part in the Somme on the British side survived the war without injury.
Lindendoff after the war said it was the Somme that broke the spirit of the German Army.
After thewar Pershing said it was Field Marshall Haig that won the war.
Casualty rates in Haig's Army were 1 in 12 died
The Casualty rate in the German Army and the French was 1 in 6 died
All wars are a waste of life, but at least in Haigs you had a higher than average chance.
