Ken Burns who did The Civil War about 15 years ago has a new 7 part part documentary(14 hours) coming to PBS at the end of September. I saw a half hour preview of this.
 
It looks like he is going to focus more on everyday people and less on the generals though its hard to tell from the preview.

Should be an interesting series. I like all his work, but the difficulty here is telling the whole truth, there are so many sensitive areas, for instance in that the ordinary people didn't make the wars but their leaders certainly did. Many still tend to blame the people rather than their warlike leaders.
