A parallel could be - what if the Turks lost at the Battle of Manzikert or the Crudaders lost in 1204. What if Hilter got the bomb first. If this is this case then there could be billions of parallel universes like on Sliders. In such a scenario our lives could be totally different in another universe or maybe we were not born.
