Victoria Woodhull, from Homer, Ohio was the first woman to run for U.S. President in 1838 (50 years before women were given the right to vote, but there were no laws impeding her from running). She was selected as candidate by the Equal Rights Party in the 1872 election. Of course, she lost to Ulysses S. Grant (also from Ohio) who was re-elected for a second term.

In 1964, Margaret Chase Smith ran for the Republic nomination in 1964. She was a U.S. senator from Maine. She became the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the presidency by either of the two major parties. She came in second to Barry Goldwater. Prior to that, in 1948, Ms. Chase became the first woman elected to both houses of Congress (In 1936 elected to the House of Representative and 1948 elected to U.S. Senate)

In 1972, Shirley Chisholm, a black New York congresswoman, sought the democratic nomination. The 1972 Democratic National convention in Miami was the first major convention in which any woman was considered for the presidential nomination. She received 151 of the delegates votes, even though she did not win the nomination, and she continued to serve in Congress until 1982.
