Hi, i came across an eyesore of a sentence on wiki, and it brought to mind the following question. In English, is there any rule that states what sounds more correct may supplant what is actually more correct.
here's the sentence:
<<Odysseus's hubris is also what incites the wrath of Poseidon to begin with, as well as continues it.>>
what i'm asking is if there's a rule that
would support the use of "continue" over "continues"? i'm wondering
this because i think the ear would tend to link continue to the verb
immediately preceding it, an infinitive, hence "continue," rather than to
"incites," which it is connected to by the conjunction "as well as."
this is more a matter of linguistics than simple grammar, i think. but i don't know. so if you know, let me know.
