Topic: Religios life Posted: 13-Feb-2007 at 01:55 |
Do u guys consider religion big part of ur life and if u do do u disagree with its laws?
|
If you look on the forum you can tell religion is a major part of my life, although it's more of a background thing to me, like breathing or blinking. I can honestly say that I agree with nearly all the laws of my faith whole-heartedly. Those that I may or may not agree with are those that I am blissfully ignorant of. (which I believe aren't too many)

I don't like being told how to live my life and don't know why religion seems to have a monopoly on ethics. You can lead a good life by following your own intrinsic and human moral code. BUT, I fully respect the choices of others, and actually come from quite a religious family myself. Luckily, they brought me up harbouring the importance of an open mind, thus allowing me to choose my own path, religious or non-religious in the future.

Well I still go to mass on Sunday, but thats more to do with the fact that I don't want an argument with my father every week. He doesn't like it when I refuse to go, some of us don't have the luxury of having a really understanding family like Emmet does :)

Sounds like me , except that it is my wife who gives the argument.
I consider myself a "Christian Confucian" in that while I strongly believe that Christianity serves one of the key reference points for Western Civilization and that it is desperalty needed for the continuity of western civilization, my belief in actual miracles is declining.

That's funny since I consider myself the same thing, although I use it in it's more literal form, of obeying the philosophy of Confucius.

I think Religion is important for maintaining the morals of the ordinary people of society, but that ones religious convictions should not be legislated at the expense of someone elses (lack of) convictions.

That is interesting. In all my online discussions, I have only met one other Confucianist. He is ethnically Chinese. If you dont mind me asking, do you practice Confucianism as part of your Chinese cultural background, or are you a convert?
If you are a convert, what led you to discover the ethics system and then select Confucianism instead of say an Abrahamic religion or perhaps Buddhism?

I agree, forced religous observances should be prohibited. Christian based laws against abortion and pornography are valid though. So are laws defining marriage by the Christian concept.

First off, Confucianism is a philosophical belief, not necessarily a religious one. In China Confucian belief has evolved into a religious movement of it's own, connected to the original philosophy of Confucius and his students. I don't take it that far. I am still a Christian and a Confucianist, I believe in the sayings of Confucius (although its been a while since I actively studied the Analects). I was captivated by the system of relationships Confucius expressed, and the heirarchies contained in these systems. I also liked the idea of venerated ones ancestors, which most Christians have done in the past. Basically my Confucian beliefs are taken straight from the Analects and the interpretation is my own. If you must define me I guess my Confucianism is heterodox and my Christianity not heterodox.

Well for the record, telling someone they're going to hell is wrong from a Christian perspective as well. There is One Judge, and she ain't it.
