Interesting interpretation of the Royal Navy not being innovative and their command being unable to understand trench warfare.

Who first built Dreadnoughts? who invented the Tank? who established the first Air Force? who won?

As there is a rather impressive monument near Beleau Wood that was built to honor the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, I don't think the French would have agreed with you.

It doesn't really matter what the US did, or did not do.  What mattered was just the threat of a new opponent, with fresh troops and untapped resources.  Germany was exhausted, and the attempt was made to end the war before the "Yanks" landed.

About the British command not understanding trench warfare, a close look at the "Battle of the Somme" should answer that one.

Who won?  It's appropriate that you pose that as a question.  There is the view that WWI in actuality, was a draw.  The German military held the idea that they were not defeated, the leadership quit on them. [The Stab in the back BS]
WWII, in holding to this view, was a continuation of WWI.

Beleau Wood was not a major battle and did not stop the German offensive and was as much a French Battle as an American one.

Not that the American troops didn't fight bravely-- they did but it just isn't the war winning action its often painted.

As for the British not understanding Trench warfare anyone who really studies the battle of the Somme will see that they did and they won that weeks long battle (it wasn't just the first day).

If the British were so bad why were their casualties no higher (and perhaps less) than any other combatant?

They were faced with a level of technology that favoured the attacker , same as everyone else -- except that had to build an army from almost nothing, which they did eventually defeating the 'best' army in the world.

In four short years they developed an army and tactics -- tanks, creeping barrage etc-- that by 1918 saw the British army as perhaps the best in the world.

The American were brave poorly equipped newcomers who would have done great things in 1919 but ,partly because of their very existence, the war ended in 1918.

The idea that they 'saved' Britain and France is simply nationalistic rubbish.

Nationalistic Rubbish?  Funny, I was thinking the same thing, but not about my writings. Wink

If Austria- Hungary had been able to militarily fight her way out of a wet paper bag the central powers may well have won.  The performance of the AH army during the war was woeful.
