Topic: egyptian for egypt? Posted: 12-Aug-2006 at 21:42 |
Hi everyone. Quick question. What was the name that Egyptians used for Egypt? If "egypt" comes from the Greek "aigyptios" (sp?), what did they call themselves?
secondly, did the rulers call themselves "pharoah" or was that just from the Bible? Thanks.

Mṣr is the Egyptian name for Egypt. The word "Pharoah" is the Greek interpretation of the Egyptian word "pera" meaning Great House. The rulers of Egypt would have called themselves "'smr per-Aa" or "Leader of the Great House". So, technically, the did not call themselves "preas" or "pharoahs".

Ancient Egyptians called thier land Kemet ("Black Land"), a reference to the rich, dark soil near the Nile.

Misr comes from Mudraya, the old Persian name for Egypt.

I misread the question, so disregard the Misr answer.

No problem. I actually had forgotten that the Persians ruled Egypt right before Alexander, and that reminded me. Thanks for the info.

Misr comes from Mudraya, the old Persian name for Egypt. |
Its the other way around. We have the Semitic forms msrym, misri, and musri dating back to the 2nd millennium BC.
And yes, the native Egyptian name is kmt, transliterated as Kemet, the "black land". The people were called "remetch en kemet" literally "people of the black land".

Here's a somewhat related question, then. If they called themselves "remetch en kemet", how did that become "aigyptos" in Greek? Does that mean "the black land" in Greek? Just wondering.

The Greek name Aiguptos, comes from the Egyptian name Hutkaptah, (some publications transliterate it as Hikuptah) one of the Egyptian names of Memphis. It literally meant "house of the ka (spirit) of Ptah". Ptah was the titular deity of Memphis.

Thanks denaywe! Very humorous! But, I don't really understand.
However, I have over a period of years, done some extensive exploration of these words (at least as far at the internet allows) and have discovered that most all of what we assume is fact, is merely speculation, etc.
It might well be the speculation of numerous persons considered as "experts" but it is speculation non-the-less.
So, I would suggest that the originator of this thread perform his/her own in depth study of this question, and report to us of the results.
I wonder if you will come to the same conclusion as have I?
Regards,
Ron
