Can anyone reccomend a good book or series of books on basic world history.  A basic  Who, what, where is what i am looking for.  Im not opposed to a good textbook, but something else would be preferable if such a thing exsists.

There must be more recent ones but  'Mankind and Mother Earth' by Arnold Toynbee (1978) is ok.

For this sort of general reading a local library is likely to be the best bet.

nb anything that covers all the worlds history is just a skim...

Im not really looking for just a skim, anything that spans a long period of time really.

If you go to Borders or Barns & Noble you should be able to find something.

Do you have an area of the world you are interested in? Perhaps Western Europe?

Allot of the information I have aquired has been through reading articles (I find they are almost as important as books). I fuly reccemond looking through wikipedia.

Tell me, what do you want  to know? Name the first  thing that comes to mind.

Just go to a big bookstore and try to find a historical atlas (a good one)

, look at whatever is interesting for you,

if you never heard of something in the book (nation, weapon, leader) just use google.

I learned quite abit this way... got a general idea on any country in the world...
