In response to an earlier thread about Hanfu, I am going to start a thread where I shall  post pictures of historical costumes - mostly Hanfu - of women in various periods of Chinese history.  The thread is entirely scholarly, and shall in no way mirror any of my previous, more explicit threads.

Clothing for Women in Warring States Period (403-221 B.C.)

Silk garmets during the Han Dynasty for Imperial Concubines (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.)

Women's Clothing during the Wei-Jin-Northern/Southern Dynasties Period (220-589 A.D.)

Dress of Tang Dynasty Noble Women (618-912 A.D.)

Clothing for Mongol Noblewomen of the Yuan Dynasty (1270-1368 A.D.)

Ceremonial Dress of Ming Empress (1368-1644 A.D.)

based on findings from the tomb of Ming Emperor Wanli (r. 1572-1628 A.D.)

Ming Dynasty Court Dress (1368-1644 A.D.)

Qing Dynasty Court Women (1644-1912 A.D.)

Qing Dynasty Formal Dress (1644-1912 A.D.)

Nara period prostitu.. uh, "singer" (Sui-Tang fashion)

Nara period entertainer [geisha] (Sui-Tang fashion)

early Heian period court lady (mid Tang fashion)

Pictures from the wickedly detailed homepage of the Genji Costume Museum in Kyoto.

Early Japanese court dress copied continental Chinese fashions faithfully.  And this is what the Japanese would've dressed like if we Chinese did not give them fashion sense:

a lady from the Yayoi period (around Wei dynasty 220-265)

Funky make-up.
