As you can read here, Tar is the most popular musical instrument of Iran, which in Persian means string. It is a string instrument with a pear-shaped body and six strings.

Sitar

Guitar

A Tarist, Susa, 2nd Millennium BC

Is it the oldest musical instrument?

IIRC archaeologists have found a 20.000 year old flute in Africa. But the tar is probably the oldest musical instument with strings.

They've found Neandathal flutes somewhere that are some 3 times that old.

Theres a tale that Gypsies bought the Guitar to Spain, complementing the string instruments that already existed there, and the 'Gypsies' (if we assume this means the Roma, for it could also refer to other traveling groups) passed though Iran on their way to Europe.

The human voice, or percussion sounds like clapping...etc... could be classed as some instruments pre-dating any others.
What a handsome figure of a dragon. No wonder I fall madly in love with the Alani Dragon now, the avatar, it's a gorgeous dragon picture.
