VUKOVARandSREBRENICA
Vukovar and Srebrenica are two cities synonymous with the war that shredded Yugoslavia.
Both cities suffered a long and brutal siege, were conquered by their
aggressors, and completely ethnically cleansed. While in Vukovar a
majority of the city's residents were allowed to flee, in Srebrenica
more than 7,500 were executed - lined up a few at a time and shot in
the back.
Today Vukovar and Srebrenica are struggling to recover. The two cities
have joined together on the path forward. Streets have been named in
Vukovar's honor in Srebrenica, and vice versa. The two cities share
numbers cultural, religious, and commemorative festivals each year.
Vukovar and Srebrenica were quite different before the war. Vukovar was
a quaint, comfortable riverside town where life was good. Srebrenica
was a resort that bustled with (mainly domestic) tourists all year
round. They flocked to the city's numbers spas with hot spring water
believed to contain healing properties.
Today the two cities are not much at all. Though most people, around
the world, have heard these two names - Vukovar and Srebrenica - very few
have actually seen them.
