Topic: Syrian and US troops clashed Posted: 24-Nov-2005 at 19:34 |
Syrian and US troops clashed after US troops attacked a Syrian village.
12 US and 3 Syrian troops reported killed in the incident.

Maybe one of the Turkish members could give a full translation and some info on the credibility of this news source..
I know of a previous clash that lead to the death of 1 Syrian soldier last month but no info on this..

The article is just explaining how it happened during the afternoon (1
pm Turkish time), near the Syrian-Iraqi border. It was talking about
how America told the Syrians to watch their border because they were
suspecting many of the terrorists were coming through Syria into Iraq.
It then says that America still holds Syria responsible for the
assassination of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon. Then the
last paragraph just explains how on his last visit to the Middle East,
Kofi Annan said that Syria could be the next Iraq. Thats the article in
a nutshell.

It is strange I have not found reports of this incident on any other news source.

It's probably false, how else can you explain that there are no other sources confirming this incident?
By the way, ArmenianSurvival translated it correctly.

Isn't it ridiculous, from the mighty US army to ask from the Syrians to do what they are unable to do themselves? That is to guard the Iraqi border. It's no secret that there're no US troops guarding it and the Syrians have other use for their army, that it to station it across their borders with Israel and Turkey.
Moreover, they're very fast to accuse Syria of being totalitarian (true, but it's the also true for all the Arab US allies in the region) and at the same time to send prisoners to be tortured there, since American legislation disallows them to do so themselves on American soil. Shame on you!

I found something on a Isreali website. http://www.debka.com/
DEBKAfile Exclusive: Syria claims US
forces suffered 11 casualties in a Syrian-US clash Thursday night, Nov.
24 without clarifying whether they meant dead or wounded
November 25, 2005, 5:14 PM (GMT+02:00)
Internal
Syrian communications channels report Syrian Desert Guards border
units fought US Marines who crossed into Syria at a point west of al
Qaim. They also claimed 30 Syrian casualties.
DEBKAfiles
military sources report the battle took place at the Syrian-Iraqi
border town of Abu Kemal. US forces were in hot pursuit of a group of
al Qaeda operatives who fled across to Syria in escape an American
attack pinning them down in Mosul. The US military delivered Syria an
ultimatum to hand the terrorists over. The American pursuit continued
Friday when Syria failed to respond.

Do they know how far fromt eh Syrian border Mosul is? Or are they just writing crap to make Syria look bad by claiming they shielded terroists that the US was in "hot pursuit" of.

Debka isnt known for its impartial take on the middle east. Very hit and miss stuff, but great reading.
Yeah they would have to be running really quick, without getting caught.
The operations are generally centered around Al-Qa'im which way off
Mosul, Abu Kemal is just opposite on the syrian side, so the would have
to go along way south and then head west
