On
November 23, 1760 the French journalist and political theorist of proto- Communism Francois-Noel Babeuf was born .
Babeuf has been credited as a major influence on the various Socialist, Communist and Anarchist movements that sprung up in the 19th century.
During the French Revolution, in which he held various minor positions, Babeuf rose to prominence as one of the most vociferous and radical advocates of the Republican cause.
After the fall of Robespierre in July 1794, Babeuf opposed the new bourgeoisie Directory regime, and organized the Societ des gaux, a small political group that regrouped the radical wing of the jacobins. Babeuf argued that the French Revolution, far from establishing the equality it had promised, had created new class structures, that although different from the Ancien Regime continued with the economic exploitation and political opression of the masses by the new ruling classes in France.Babeuf concluded that obly a further revolution would ensure a true democratic state in which also economic and social equality was garanteed. Babeufs group attempted without success to organise an armed revolt of the Parisian masses against the Directory, and in May 1796 Babeuf and his collaborators were arrrested, tried and a year later executed.
