My last city had a large park which was a left over from the 1974 World's Fair. I suppose it would be the town square since downtown did not have one.
Riverfront park:

Free Vacation?
Take a Virtual Reality Tour and click yourself through my city, Randers, Denmark. More than 80 panoramas - all 360 deg.
An old medieval city with old half timebered houses, old churches, narrow streets and squares.
You can even enter some of the buildings - like the Town Hall in the picture.
Click the picture to take the tour - we start at the Town Hall in the center of the city.

Most definitely not. It's nothing more than a tourist trap from the Castle down to St Giles. From there down to Holyrood it's mainly small museums, pubs and sandwich shops. The "main centre" is a bit hard to define but it includes a lot more than than the royal mile.
