Topic: coolest Chinese national flag Posted: 16-Sep-2004 at 00:40 |
I choose the imperial flag of Qing, not only is it unique with a dragon and keeps alot of tradition, its also designed uniquely, its a banner like the one in bhutan. The other flags are dull, and merely copies of different national flags, the five stripes are similar to those multi stripes of many countries, the PRC flag is typical communist ones, and the ROC one also has similar design to alot of the anglo-saxon heritage flags.

They all look pretty ugly to me..... But if I had to pick, I'd pick the Red Earth White Sun Blue sky one....
I think the greek flag is really pretty. Also like the Isreal flag. hmm.... Also like the Thai flag alot. They are simple, yet eligent. I wish Taiwan can have a flag like that.

I like none of them! They all look unnatural, and the colours are put together rudely.
I like Greek flag, but I abhor Israeli flag.

Well.... dragons, especially the designs after Song dynasty aren't my favorite artistic creations. If there any dragon I like, it'd be from the Han and pre Han dynasty dragons. Simple, and elegent.
Actually, the Qing flag in the movie Hero is pretty nice

Because it is a total copy of USSR hammer and sickle... Only much less "inspirational". Hammer and sickle at least looks powerful and violent...

The Qing dynasty dragon flag is too complicated.
The five stripes flag completely ignore the other ethnic minorities in
China and doens't look original enough. There are already too many
countries, namely European and African ones that use "stripes flags".
The PRC flag is too political.
The ROC flag is my favorite because it represents the Chinese people and
modern China.

The one who designed the five stripe thing must have failed art...
I don't know if it is just graphics, but the dragon in the second Qing flag looks rather like a blue worm...

The five stripes are supposed to represent the five main ethnic groups in
China. I'm not sure how the colors were chosen though.
As for the Qing flag, here is a better version.

The five colors, Red, Yellow, Blue, White, Black, comes from the traditional Chinese view of the world, the five element. Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth.
And the five directions East, West, South, North, Center.
The number of 5 means a complete and never ending cicle of the universe.
That's the real reason for the five colors.

Where did you get your information from?
http://flagspot.net/flags/cn-nqta.html
The 1912 Chinese flag had five horizontal stripes; each color
representing a people but there are at least two different assignments:
red = Manchurians
yellow = Han Chinese
blue = Mongolians
white = Muslims
black = Tibetans
from "Outlines of Chinese Symbolism and Art Motives" by C.A.S. Williams
(Shanghai: Kelly & Walsh, 1941, reprinted by Dover, 1976)
Bruce Tindall, 05 December 1995
-----
red = Han Chinese
yellow = Manchuria
blue = Mongolians
white = Tibet
black = Muslims
from a book by Whitney Smith

Yes, Kulong, we all know it mean those 5 races also. I posted those information on this thread myself. I am just saying, besides that obvious reason, the 5 colors are traditional colors in Han Chinese culture.
