Topic: Colonial resistance leaders. Posted: 15-Sep-2004 at 20:12 |
As the majority of South East Asia, Africa, the
Americas and Oceanic nations became members of
various European colonial powers i was just
wondering who you think is the most striking
resistance leader or fighter of any given country
against the colonial invaders.
For me it would have to be a Tasmanian (Thats
south of Australia). His name was Tongerlongerta
and was a chief of the largest militant tribe in the
area. He was shot in the arm by a musket and had to
amputate the arm with a sharpened rock then
cauterized it in a fire. He then led one of the most
succesful gurrela campaigns in Australia.
Id also have to mention Walya from the same area.
She was kidnapped, taken to a small island, gang
raped by sealers, escaped by killing her captors.
Liberated ten other men from the island then led a
crusade against pretty much anyone who got in her
way.

I've always been a fan of Ho Chi Minh. I can think of few who were rebels for so much of their lives an none who were so successful.

I'd have to go with Hendrik Witbooi, because he had an unbreakable will, although I find the man to be a jerk.

Louis Riel: Fought against Canadian imperialists in North-West Resistance and was hanged. He might have succeeded had the natives joined him or if he gave up his reluctance to "shed blood" and attacked the Canadians first.

Bhagat Singh!
He was a member of the Indian resistance against Britain, and his mission was quite successful.
The British feared him sooo much that they had to excecute him in the middle of the night, chop him up into little pieces, and burn him just to make sure he wouldn't come back.

PS Anujkhamar: By a mistake, instead of to reply your post, I started editing in yours. I didnt deleted or modified your previous post. Sorry about that.
What I was trying to post was that its really curious you mentioned that. Spaniards impossed the same punishment to the mayan leaders.
I mean, being executed by a firing squad, hang the body for a couple of days and then chop the body in pieces, burn it and finally spread the ashes. They were indeed very affraid.

yep, he was a sikh.
more often than not if a person has a surname of singh, he is sikh, unless of course he's atheist.
i'm quite sure bhagat singh was sikh though.
PS: and it's ok jalisco, no harm done

Abd-el-krim fought versus Spain, and later France in Marocco, in the region of the Rif.
