What would you say are the most important historical periods? I'm trying to keep this as general as possible (i.e. WWI & II, Victoriana, The Renaissance, etc.)

Classical Greece for me (obvious enough )...
The basis of a democratic state is liberty. Aristotle, Politics

Those that can give up essential liberty to obtain a temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin

The most important in history would be... the period where the Mongols withdrew from Europe to go to the Khan's funeral and the period where Ming Dynasty China said "Screw the world, we're the best" and went onto 500 years of decline.

If those two events were different then world history as we know it would be drastically changed, though right now there seems to be a power shift balancing out to the East (China/India/Korea/Thailand/Indonesia are rapidly growing countries)

Not to mention the October Revolution and afterwards...
