Topic: Forum organization Posted: 12-Aug-2004 at 17:08 |
Since we're starting a new forum, we should take advantage of fresh syncretism.
One thing that we can do here that we could not do is to making
sub-forums. For example, we can have a subforum in the languages forum
just for Turkish or for language tutoring, or in the intellectual
discussions, add subforums for literature and science.
So if you have suggestions, feel free to make them.

Hello! I like the system as it is now. When the forum expands (and it will!), we might consider to put up new sections.

There has been some discussion in
this
thread about the India/Africa/Americas forum.
Now, i'm wondering if the sub forum feature could have some use here.
Could we not have on the main forums page, a basic, by region list of main forums, and within each, a list of subforums?
That way we don't need 3 main forums for Europe, all of Asia
(including India and SE Asia) can go in one Asian forum, and so on, and
each of those forums then can have the relevant sub forums in them.
How does that sound?

Also, could we merge General Gaming and Historical Amusement, with
subforums for role play, cumputer games, or general amusements?
Hmm, mainly i want to clean up the main forum page, make it look less
cluttered, also, it will make the individual main forums look fuller
juicier

That sounds reasonable. What about the old problem of Time and geography? The main forums are split not only geographicly but other times they are split by era.

So under a single European main forum, we can have medival, renassaince
and modern sub-forums, there are still there in essence, just sorted by
continent on the main forums page.
Hmm, go here - http://forums.invisionpower.com/
They are the main forums for Invisionboard, just have a look around,
some of the main forums have sub-forums in them, just to give you a
feel of how these forums could look.

NOOOO! Ok, we can make Historical amusements a sub-forum of the tavern, but General gaming has to stay independend, it has become my favourite forum by now . also, no one ever made a historical role-play...

The Game forum isn't going anywhere, just that there will be a
sub-forum in there for role-play/historical fantasy/stories/whatever.
It will all be kept seperate, but just that all amusement/entertainment
discussions, be on games, movies, or whatever, be under the banner of
one main forum on the main page = less clutter + more localised
specialisation.
Hmm, can sub-forums have their own seperate mods too, just for that (and any other) sub-forum?
This could create more vacancies, so make the mod team more inclusive.

you mean like game reports? this I would support!

I also wondered about that...probably not but the Mods can divide their attention according to the sub-forum(s)

I know that with Invision board, you can set mods just for specific sub-forums, not sure about these boards though.

Pre-Columbian Americas should enter Rennaisance/Imperial Age as a sub-forum. |
Don't you mean Post-Columbian?
We don't need tons and tons of subforums, just 2-3 for each main one, the main one can be just general.
Modern is modern, its not geography spcecific, but having seperate
Medival and Rennasiance just creates two under utilised forums (old AE,
they were both somewhat quiet), where as you have an East Asian forum
that coveres several millenia (hence why it was so much busier).
If your doing Africa on its own, you might want to make sure it
includes ancient Egypt and post-roman to early modern N. Africa too,
lest it be too empty.

This is embarassing, but I'll have to take back my first post.
We can't add sub-forums yet. The demo forums that they have are running
on an alpha version with new features, but it's not realeased.

Will there always be the option of upgrading the forum software with ease at a later date?

well, for most part I completely disagree...for example egypt is geographically part of africa but culturally belongs more or less to the middle east (especially after the arab conquest) same goes for Europe during hellenistic and roman times....it sort of doesn't fit to discuss celts and greeks in the same forum...
terefore, I wuld leave the forms like they were...just find a pleasant solution for the india/africa/america forum

Irrelevant, its a geography thing.
Post arabic Egypt = Islamic Empires subforum
During Roman times, and even Greek times, Celts are there in the
background, influening and being influences, so its not out of the
ordinary that they should pop up they existed side by side, besides,
why should Greece and Rome get a seperate forum for ancient era, but
not the ancient Nubians of the ancient Indus valley?
