What is byzantine music (for the church) in your imagination? West style or east (oriental)? What are their musical instruments? West style or east?

And finally, have you ever listened to a sample of byzantine music?

Neither east of west, but a mix that can go into its own group

waw stra.  how are you?

I am sure that if the europans listen byzantine music, they say "this musical sound is absolutely oriental." And of course that is true, Byzantine music is oriental itself.

Well. Is the Ottomans palace music different than byzantine music?

My PC is full of Byzantine and Orthodox hymns, but as I am musically completely illiterate, I can only appreciate this wonderful music, but have no idea how it works.
A very comprehensive collection, also legally downloadable, of Byzantine(style) choral hymns can be found here:

http://www.sfaturiortodoxe.ro/muzica.html

My favourite is:

Agni Partene (Holy Virgin)

I can also recommend Coptic Hymns, not all that different in style:

It's practically the same. Byzantine music (which was mainly  limited to hymns) and its tonic system (different from western tonic sol-fa system) are used in Ottoman palace music. Byzantine music was a mix of all the nations in the empire, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Armenian etc... and it was later enriched with Ottoman elements when they conquered the Byzantine empire.

What exactly were the Ottoman elements/influence in Byzantine music?
I would've thought it was the other way around. Confused

Komnenos, good taste there, that Agni Parthene hymn is certainly up there with the best.

Are you familiar with Petros Gaitanos ??
if not, i suggest you get acquainted with his Byzantine chanting..
you won't be disappointed.. trust me!!

Well in Orthodox music (at least in Slavic Orthodox churches) no instruments are used. Only Choir.

I listen to Byzantine music.  As for its content and style, I think Byzantine Greek Orthodox chant is the most recognizable form of Byzantine music.  I like it better than Western chant, but then I guess I am a bit biased towards things Byzantine!  LOL  But there is some secular Greek folk music that has its roots in the late Byzantine period.

The best production of Byzantine chant to come out in a long time has been done by the choral group Cappella Romana.  They recently put out a new CD of Byzantine chant and some Western Renaissance music from the period of the fall of Constantinople, 1453.  It is an excellent CD with flawless performances and impeccable production.  Cappella Romana performs a wide variety of Orthodox music, including Russian and Slavic.  Check them out at: http://www.cappellaromana.org/

A thread especially for Byzantine music - which is great because I had been posting such of other threads, where they may be heard to find.
