Here's the last of a series of prototypes I've been working on. They're 100% authentic as far as I can tell. There's 3-4 more decorative items to add and I've finally found out a recipe for Aztec paint so the experimenting is over, the next one I make will be the real thing.

hey paul i have a quick question what are those carvings? and what do they signify and once again that is a beautiful weapon of death  i came up on some eagle and owl feathers and i wanted to know if you knew if it was common for them to be tied onto the macuahuitl. also whats the recipe for paint? and nope i haven't started mine yet i'm still looking for some wood to carve it out of i'm either gonna use some fire wood from my back yard or a 2x4 of pine from the home depot, hows that for authenticity lol.

Pinewoods sounds ok. It's cheap, easy to carve and their was loads of it around tenochtitlan. The carvings are just stuff I found in codices and the meaning is they were the easiest to carve. Aztecs made their paint from cactus juice. good luck.

Thye're made from Obsidian. It was one of a number of materials used.

I've tried to get a decent close up image of some blades but my digital camera's really cheap. One day I'll get my SLR and have the pics digitised. Till then the best pic I can sjow you is a sacrificial dagger I made a while ago.

This is a microblade made from the stuff.

And here's how it starts.

Really good work - what did you use to set the blades in the shaft?

hey paul i finally got started on my maquahuitl, either your a great wood worker or the size of the wood that you started with was almost the size of the maquahuitl cuz its taken me about 15hrs to shape the upper part with the blades and i'm still not done with the handle. or maybe its because i have a bad chisel. ne ways i wanted to ask you another question about how wide  the area with the blades is mine is about 1.5- 2inches. the whole thing is about 30 inches long and it weighs about 6lb's rite now i still have to shave off some more from the handle but i'm thinking its gonna weigh about 3.5-4lb's at the end. i'll take some pictures and post them soon, so that you can see for urself. but its starting look good. oh yeah and about how wide should the groove be for the blades?

Looking forward to seeing the pics. The groove for the blades should be however wide the blades are. The wood's easier to fit to the blades than visaversa.

Very nice. What are the carvings?

you could use a wood polish, something natural and authentic like beeswax.

Wicked awesome Paul! I read about your katana/macuahuitl tests - nice stuff, ever see how they do against kevlar? Another thought I had while reading the old posts, how about putting the obsidian/flint in a steel sword?
