Arrests of Chinese women for prostitution in Malaysia rising: report
< = src="http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=10750&m=3&tp=7&d=j&t=s">
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) Jul 01, 2005
The number of Chinese women arrested for prostitution in Malaysia has increased dramatically this year according to police statistics, a report said Friday.

A total of 1,102 women from China were detained between January and May this year compared to 1,821 arrested in the whole of 2004, the New Straits Times quoted Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as telling parliament.

The figure compares to just 196 arrests in 2000, Abdullah said in a written reply to an opposition lawmaker.

Abdullah, who is also Internal Security Minister, said police have arrested a total of 2,323 foreign women for prostitution up until May this year.

Besides the women from China, those arrested were mainly from Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Russia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Authorities in eastern Sarawak state on Borneo island have said they are considering a proposal to ban the entry of single women travelling alone from mainland China as part of efforts to curb prostitution.

Sarawak police said they would submit a proposal to the state government on the ban, citing statistics that at least 40 women from China enter the state every day.

Malaysian police frequently rescue mainland Chinese women from the clutches of crime syndicates. Many claim they were lured to Malaysia with promises of lucrative and legitimate employment.

Prostitution is illegal in the predominantly Muslim nation.

The traficcing of women has increasingly become a hot-line issue in the 21.century..Kofi Annan also had stressed out this in the article he wrote for the magazine Foreign Affairs.

Do you folks think is it really hard to combat with this problem?I guess so.

I had read the story of an ukrainian woman forced into prostitution in Israel...She tells that she begged so many her clients-students,priests,lawyer..But no one paid attention except for completing their satisfaction.

IN 1998 The Ukrainen Inferior ministery had reported that 400.000 Ukrainian women were traficced across the ukrainian borders during the pos-soviet era.

It's really hard to crash prostitution and child labor, because it's not sth which stands from it's own. It's a network, which involves all good things in the world like drugs, arms trade etc.Everything is connected. But nothing it's impossible.

Legality and toleration are some good ways to confront with this problem. You see, people have the bug of being attracted by what it is forbitten. That mesure is good for drugs only, not for other crime forms.

That only works if prostitution is visible abd above ground, illegal immigrants smuggled into a country to be forced into prostitution are by their very nature invisible, because if they were visible, they would be arrested and deported and the smugglers busted and imprisoned.
Now, legalising and regulating prostitution removes much of the 'underground' element, but has next to no effect on people who are smuggled into countries illegally.
The problem here is thus tied to the wider issue of illigal people smuggling, whether its Chinese cockle pickers in the N. of England, or Moldovian prostitutes in the middle east.
You need some sort of international body to tackle this problem.

The funny thing is that the Chinese government claims to have absolutely no prostitution present in the nation and China has some of the strictests laws protecting womens rights.  However in reality prostitution is widespread and closely tied with corruption in the regime and with continue to stay under the radar screen in China.  Prostitutes can be found in most 5 star hotels and Spas in China and also in many barbers and message parlors.  It is often ignored by the police in most major cities because of its connection with some high ranking politicians.
