Hi and welcome Tony. I filled in your survey.
That's quite a project you have going. The era after WWII is usually referred to as the "Atomic Age". It drove science discovery at a mind bending pace through the 50's and 60's.
It entered daily life in ways folks today don't realize. Everything was "Atom Powered", Movies and even cartoons had the concept sneak in.
The scary thing was how little was known about it and the long term effects of radiation. The average person wasn't aware of the dangers outside of the "Bomb", until "3 Mile Island" and Chernobyl.
I lived about 150 miles from 3 mile. Even though I knew much more than the average person, I still called my Dad to find out more and should I get out of the area.
His reply was surprising. He told me to wait and see what President Carter's reaction was after he visited 3 mile. Carter was one of the Navy's nuke experts in the early days. He had even entered a runaway Canadian reactor to withdraw the fuel rods by hand. This wasn't common knowledge until then.
