An artifact found in Chan Chan, Peru, attributed to the Chimu, is nearly identical to the "soup can" device known to children as a "string phone".

Just shows they had an imagination. But other that for amusement what purpose did it serve....unknown afaic...although an early stethoscope is not beyond my belief system.

There is speculation that it might have served some ritual need. Owing to the fact it was found in a temple site.

Dunno fer sure. But it's not hard to imagine some slickassed priest rigging this gadget to allow someone to speak directly to "the gods", for an appropriate fee of course.
