I have an old dictionary which says that K Edwin of Northumbria erected a fountain in 616. I can not seem to find where this fountain was in net/web searches. All i have found is that he did set-up or restore/improve (drinking-)fountains (plural) with copper cups/brass bowls on (high)ways for travellers. Can anyone tell me where the fountain was or else fountains were? (The book must have had one particular/special fountain in mind?) Also wondering if there is any connection with Edwinstowe (Sherwood, Notts)? or Fountains Abbey?

I realize that maps of that time are probably non existent, but very early maps of the original colonies sometimes showed things such as watering spots, huts or shelters etc.

Maybe medieval maps might show something.

Bede in his Ecclesiastical History of the English reports of Edwin;
That king took such care for the good of his nation, that in several places where he had seen clear springs near the highways, he caused stakes to be fixed, with brass bowls hanging at them, for the conveniency of travellers; nor durst any man touch them for any other purpose than that for which they were designed, either through the dread they had of the king, or for the affection which they bore him.
The dictionary says that Edwin, King of the Firth of Forth, founded a fountain in Scotland in 616.

Thankyou Sidney, and Red Clay.
The Scotland one sounds like probably the same one. I'll see if search including Scotland brings anything up.
(I didn't even think to look in Bede/EH or others, so i will also check Old English Chronicles, etc, even wiki. (I don't have any much books here or get out to library etc much.))
Sean. (I wish i was not still stuck in NZ, there are so many things in UK i need/want to visit etc.)

I have just realized earlier today while briefly thinking about this that the fountain may be in Edinburgh since that is near firth of forth, and some thought that the name is Edwin's burh (though it is said that it is from earlier din Eidyn like in the Gododdin). (Its quite remarkable that Edwin ranged from Edinburgh to Edwinstowe!?)

I will  be adding the Bede bit to my Water versus Fluoride article (see http://iwillnotbeassimilated.blogspot.com/water-versus-fluoride.html ).

* the original Eidyn in the pa gur is Dover (ND)/Guinnon (HB)/Eidyn 2 (PG), or/and Othona (ND)/Dubglas (HB)/Eidyn 1 (PG). (See 12 battles of Arthur found paper.)
