Pictures of India from 'Oriental Memoirs' by James Forbes, 1813
Forbes travelled to India in 1765 as a writer for the British East India Company and was resident there until 1784. He was a prolific writer and artist and filled 52,000 manuscript pages with notes and sketches concerning all aspects of Indian life, its wildlife, flora and architecture.

Interesting images. I particularly like the one below.

When stationed in Gujarat, Forbes was presented with two hunting cheetahs by the chief of a province, one of which is the subject of the drawing. The drawing was made by Lady Malet, from a picture painted in water-colour by a native of India, taken on the spot. It shows the cheetah gnawing over the antelope he has just killed in the chase, and the gamekeeper cutting off the haunch to give to the hungry animal, to redeem the rest of his prey. Sir Charles Malet and some of his Persian friends at Cambay are spectators. One of the attendants carries a hawk, trained for the chase of antelopes and other game, which formed a principal amusement at Cambay.

Its a shame we don't have the original watercolour. Lady Malet (Susan) was daughter of the painter James Wales, and didn't marry Charles Malet until 1799 - a year after he had left India.

An Antelope - according to the description. Most likely a blackbuck.
