I'm working on a novel (17th C France) and need help with a matter of title.
The wife of a Comte is a Comtesse. When the Comte dies, as I understand, his son inherits the title of Comte. His wife would become the Comtesse.
What is the title of the current Comte's mother, the former Comtesse? If she is still a Comtesse, how is she distinguished from the son's wife, the new Comtesse?
I need to know how she would be referred both by the public, friends and by the family in formal situations.
