I didn't read anything that indicated they were cannibalistic. Just absolutely mad.

Their run lasted 20+ years. The lack of communications in that era made that possible.

That and a much less well defined system of movement. Ie. road networks. Which enabled communications.

Rivers were still king in their era...because if ya went traipsing off into the boonies...ie. the forest, in them days; you will liable to meet unfriendly natives more often than than a friendly settler.
