Is this generally realised?

For nearly a thousand years, the largest "Christian" city, & notwithstanding being sacked by "Latin"
Roman Catholic forces in the 3rd Crusade, Constantinople was the major European metropolis.

Often excluded in historical considerations of European development, & regarded as 'Asian' since 
the Ottoman conquest, never-the-less, Istanbul is today, the most populous city in Europe,
& by quite a margin, over London.

In fact, it is  often not realised that even  Sydney & Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities - are as big
as Paris & Berlin.

Excellent question.

The general answer is no to all of yours above.
For a variety of reasons.

But the most basic is that history, per se, is not always taught as we would like it and or prefer it to be. Certainly from the historians perspective with a focus on 'objectivity'. Nationalism or previously Imperialism or in general nationalistic Sectarianism often confuses the question.

If not deliberately and directly obfuscates and distorts it.

It was and is a magnificent city. No matter it's change of name.

It is true but also it has some special issue.  

Many Europe capitals have real small land instant of Istanbul. Berlin is an example.
