Several sovereigns and monarchs had a byname. A byname is a secondary name.       

Peter I was Tsar of Russia 1682 to 1725. He was called Peter the Great.       

Duarte I was King of Portugal 1433 to 1438. He was called the Eloquent.       

Louis XV ruled as King of France from 1715 to 1774. He was known as Louis the Beloved (Louis le bien aimé).

Philip III of Spain was King from 1598 to 1621. He was called Felipe the Pious.     

Magnus Olafsson was King of Norway 1035-1047 and King of Denmark 1042-1047. He was known as Magnus the Good.

William II was King of Sicily from 1166 to 1189. He was known as William the Good.     

John VI was Duke of Brittany from 1399 to 1442. He was referred to as John the Wise.

King John of England lost the Angevin lands in France to a triumph King Philip II in 1204. The magnificent Angevin Empire was gone.    
With this loss, the barons coined another nickname for John: 'Softsword'.

Henry VI was the Duke of Bavaria from 1026 to 1042. He was known as Henry the Black and Henry the Pious. Later Henry was elected as Holy Roman Emperor Henry III.

He was known as Silly Billy when he was the Duke of Clarence.     
It was said that during a royal visit to the Bedlam hospital for lunatics, one of the inmates had pointed to Prince William, the Duke of Clarence, and shouted, "Silly Billy! Silly Billy!"
