Désirée Bernadotte (Queen Desideria of Sweden) asked Napoleon Bonaparte to be godfather to her child, who was born July 4, 1799.      
The name Oscar was chosen by Napoleon.      
Napoleon had been an admirer of the Ossianic poetry of James Macpherson.

Prince Albert Victor was born on January 8, 1864.      
He was the son of the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, and Princess Alexandra.     
Against the wishes of his parents, Queen Victoria chose the name Albert Victor, after her husband, the Prince Consort, and herself.     
Albert Victor's two other names, Christian Edward were chosen by his parents.

Princess Margaret of Connaught (1882-1920) was the daughter of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught.      
In 1905 she married Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden. She became Princess Margareta of Sweden.     
In 1907, Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Margareta became Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Sweden.      
Her namesake is Princess Margaretha, her granddaughter.

After nine months of marriage to King Henry VII of England, Elizabeth of York gave birth to a son at Winchester on September 19, 1486.     
Henry was keen to stress his Welsh-British rather than French-Plantagenet roots.      
The boy was named Arthur after the legendary British King Arthur.

Queen Philippa was honored with two granddaughters named Philippa.       
Princess Philippa of Lancaster was the daughter of John of Gaunt.      
Princess Philippa of Clarence was the daughter of Lionel, Duke of Clarence.

Napoleon I, Emperor the French and his wife, Empress Marie Louise had one son.     
He was named Napoleon François Charles Joseph.      
He was named François after his maternal grandfather, Emperor Francis I of Austria.     
From the spring of 1814, Napoleon François resided in Austria and was known as "Franz", his second given name.

Queen Victoria of Great Britain's first child, a daughter, was born on November 21, 1840.      
The Princess Royal was named Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise.     
Her first middle name of Adelaide was in honor of the Queen's Aunt Adelaide, Queen Consort of King William IV.

There have been four Gustaf Adolfs of Sweden.     
Gustaf II Adolf was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632.     
Gustaf IV Adolf was King of Sweden from 1792 to 1809.      
Gustaf VI Adolf was King of Sweden from 1950 to 1973.      
Prince Gustaf Adolf Oscar (1906-1947) was the eldest son of Gustaf VI Adolf.

His mother, Queen Philippa of Portugal was the daughter of John of Gaunt of England.     
Edward was named in honor of his great-grandfather, King Edward III of England.

Constance of Castile (c1140-1160) was Queen of France as the second wife of Louis VII.      
Her father was Alfonso VII of Leon and Castile.       
Alfonso VII's mother was Urraca, Queen of Leon, Castile and Galicia.     
Urraca's mother was Constance of Burgundy (1046-1093).       
Thus Constance of Castile was named after her great-grandmother, Constance of Burgundy.

She was known as Queen Josefina.      
She was a daughter of Eugene de Beauharnais.      
Joséphine was named after her paternal grandmother, Empress Joséphine of France.     
She was given the name Josephine by request of Napoleon.

Tsar Nicholas I of Russia had named his own sons Alexander and Konstantin (Constantine) in honor of his brothers, Alexander I and Grand Duke Konstantin.    
Also Nicholas I named his younger sons, Nicholas and Michael after his brothers, Grand Duke Nicholas and Grand Duke Michael.
