Sometimes a monarch has succeeded to the throne at a young age. There has been a regent for the sovereign.    

Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden was fourteen when his father was assassinated in 1792.   
His uncle Charles acted as regent until Gustav Adolf attained his majority in 1796.

In November 1226 King Louis VIII of France died.    
His wife Queen Blanche of Castile became regent for their son Louis IX.      
Louis IX was twelve years old. Blanche had him crowned within a month of his father's demise in Reims.

Afonso V of Portugal was only six years old when he succeeded his father in 1438.    
During his minority, Afonso V was placed under the regency of his mother, Queen Eleanor of Aragon, in accordance with a will of his late father.    
In 1439, the Portuguese Cortes decided to replace Queen Eleanor with Afonso's uncle, Peter, Duke of Coimbra.

King Henry III of England was crowned at the age of nine in 1216.      
From Henry's accession until he declared himself of age in 1227, England was governed by two men.     
William Marshall was the regent and Hubert de Burgh was justiciar.

On the day before King Henry IV of France was assassinated, his wife, Marie de Medici was crowned Queen of France.       
As the crowned Queen, she successfully asserted her claim to be regent for her son, the nine year old Louis XIII.

Charles II of Spain was three years old when his father, King Philip IV, died on September 17, 1665.       
The Council of Castile (as the Regency Council) appointed Philip's wife and Charles II's mother, Mariana of Austria, regent for the minor sovereign.

Three days before King William III of The Netherlands died on November 23, 1890, Queen Emma became regent for her husband.    
She continued as regent for the new monarch, her underage daughter, Wilhelmina, until Wilhelmina's eighteenth birthday on August 31, 1898.

James V was King of Scotland from 1513 until 1542.    
He became king at just seventeen months old, when his father, King James IV, was killed at the Battle of Flodden Field on September 9, 1513.     
During the minority of King James V, John Stewart, Duke of Albany acted as regent intermittently between 1514 and 1524.

Henry VI of England was born on December 6, 1421.      
He succeeded to the throne as King of England the day after his father Henry V's demise on September 1, 1422. Henry VI was nine months old.      
One of Henry V's brothers, Prince John, Duke of Bedford, was appointed senior regent of the realm.

Madeleine of France, also called Magdalena of Valois (1443-1495) was a daughter of Charles VII of France and Marie of Anjou.    
She married Gaston, Prince of Viana, son and heir of Gaston IV, Count of Foix.     
Prince Gaston died in 1470, predeceasing his father.      
Madeleine acted as regent for her children, Francis I and Catherine I, who were monarchs of Navarre.

Philippe d'Orléans Regent of France from 1715 to 1723, during the youth of Luis XV, after the death of Luis XIV. Very nice guy.

Anna Leopoldovna, a niece of Empress Anna of Russia, was the regent of Russia from November 1740 to November 1741 for her son, the Emperor Ivan VI.    
Ivan was named heir to the Russian throne by Empress Anna in 1740, shortly before her demise.      
A few weeks later, the Emperor's appointed regent, Ernst Johann Biron, was arrested.     
Burkhard Munnich and Andrey Osterman appointed Anna Leopoldovna regent.

The Infanta Isabella was the daughter of King Ferdinand VII of Spain.    
She was proclaimed sovereign on September 29, 1833 on the demise of Ferdinand.    
She reigned as Isabella II. Queen Isabella was three years old when she became the monarch.      
Her mother, Maria Christina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, was the regent.

Anne of Austria was the Queen Consort of King Louis XIII of France.     
She served as regent for their son Louis XIV from 1643 to 1651.

Oleg of Novgorod was a Varangian prince who ruled all or part of the Rus' people during the early 10th century.       
He was a regent of Rurik's son, Prince Igor of Kiev.
