How similar are the works of Machiavelli (The Prince) and Sun Tzu (The Art of War)?

Fairly similar. They both recommend using whatever means is most appropriate for a given situation. Neither really gets into the nitty-gritty of how to govern an army or nation, they just lay down a set of principles for a general or governor to command by.
