QuoteReplyTopic: Thebe, a female tyrant? Posted: 01-Dec-2014 at 04:37
Thebe, the sister-wife of Alexander of Pherae (Thessaly), lived in the 4th century B.C. Her husband was the TAGOS (hereditary tyrant) of the city of Pherae, which he ruled in a most despotic manner. Thebe was probably abused, both physically and emotionally, by her vicious husband. It seems that she and her other brothers plotted to eliminate Alexander. They succeeded in assasinating him; but what followed this murder is not clear. At least one ancient historian claimed that the eldest brother then assumed the title of Tagos of Pherae; but it was Thebe, by far the most dynamic, aggressive and ambitious of the surviving siblings, who actually ruled.
If so, then Thebe would have been the only female tyrant in ancient Greek history.
