Yep, that's the one. I chose him because he is the person who, in Recent History (that is, my timespan: 21 years) I most look up to. A genius at his trade, and a rare gentleman in the world he lives in. So he isn't exaclty an influential player in History, but the thread didn't specify that.

Stalinesque. I guess you are wrong here, Stalin was like a monster in the form of human, Robespierre was a human who had been visited by evil but in essence he remained pretty humane. He wasn't in the same class as Stalin or Hitler, he wouldn't have sent people to extermination camp, but he wasn't a saint either he commited some atrocities.  but he had also some very beautiful ideas and he was very sincere, he did believe what he was doing was right. Stalin and Hitler were liars, all they wanted is the manipulation of the people for their own gain.

 Heheheh, cool. When i started to read about Robespierre i thought he was a normal tyrant but the more I read about him, the more I discover about human nature. He is a wonderful subject to study and most people will find similarities btw Robespiere and themselves. that's why he is very hard to dislike. he is like this man who was trying to balance good and evil for the greater good of the mass, but he didn't quite know how to do that. So he went though a phase of trial and error. He clearly knew he was going to die though through his actions, he also knew he've made many mistakes, for some reasons he was the sacrificial lamp of the Jacobins.

If these are to be my favourite people, they should be the ones I intend to invite to my 101st birthday party (by which time I assume I should be in a position to communicate with them

The party will be held in the Mermaid Tavern (or the Elysian version thereof), which means I don't need to invite Shakespeare and Jonson and their friends, since they will already be there.

Hate to break the news to you but Tsar Samuil was Bulgarian as Goce Delcev was also. There are noumerous neutral sites that will educate you before u become a synonym of laugh. A good start will be from here:
