A translation:

Wine became haram (forbidden) in sharia (Islamic laws) because the ignorance of the ignorants
Like the moon which was splitted because the deniers of the faith (refers to Splitting of the moon)
This is halal (lawful) under command of the intelligence for the wise people
This is haram (forbidden) in the sharia laws for the silly people

A rough translation:

I see wine inebriating the minds (of people) and letting loose hidden manners, causing disasters

To the fool it gives more foolishness and the decent it leaves untouched

I have found that the most lacking in wisdom, when drunk, are the most unwise when sober

The poem loses so much beauty when translated. I'm sure this is also the case with Avicenna's poem.

I am not a poet, but perhaps this is a good translation?

Some people, inebriated with wine, make foolish choices and they can destroy relationships and their own lives.

If one is a fool, then wine makes them even more foolish, but a decent person can control the foolish thoughts.

People who are lacking in wisdom when drunk, are also lacking when sober.

How do you all like it?

Regards, Ron
