Zugzwang (German for "compulsion to move", pronounced [ˈtsuːktsvaŋ]) is a situation found usually in chess, but also in various other games, where one player is put at a disadvantage because he has to make a move when he would prefer to pass and make no move. The fact that the player must make a move means that his position will be significantly weaker than the hypothetical one in which it was his opponent's turn to move.

The term finds its formal definition in combinatorial game theory, where it specifically means that it directly changes the outcome of the game from a win to a loss. The term is used less precisely in games such as chess, i.e., the game theory definition is not necessarily used in chess (Berlekamp, Conway & Guy 1982:16), (Elkies 1996:136). For instance, it may be defined loosely as "a player to move cannot do anything without making an important concession" (van Perlo 2006:479). Putting the opponent in zugzwang is a common way to help the superior side win a game. In some cases it is necessary to make the win possible (Müller & Pajeken 2008:173).

Well, your attempts at starting a flame war is what's clumsy.Evil Smile If you really knew anything about US politics ,  you would realise that the Pres. is a master Gamesman.  You don't survive and florish in Chicago ploitics by being a naieve dummy.  He's being challenged here at home by Right Wing extremists in the Republican party. He's also dealing with problems you could not begin to understand.
But why is it? You read a few highly biased news reports, from questionable sources and think you know exactly what's going on in a political system you really know very little about. [But don't feel bad, half the US public doesn't understand exactly what's going on most of the time.]

You mentioned Chess.  The US could be likened to the Chessmaster that plays against 10-15 other players at once, moving from board to board.  And in modern international politics, nothing is ever quite how it seems, from the outside.

BTW- Most of the Arctic Shelf is already under an International Treaty.  Any agressive moves in that region would provoke an international response, not just from the US.  I don't believe Russia is willing to risk an armed conflict over Arctic Wastes that could melt out in the next 20 years.  Putin, like Obama, has many more pressing and more important issues to deal with.

BTW Welcome aboard.  I always enjoy crossing swords on international politics.  Gets the juices flowing.Big smile

Yomud,  from an historical aspect, all that you've mentioned isn't anything really new.  The countries involved and some names have changed.  But from the perspective of someone who has lived through the Cold War, the more things change, the more they stay the same.Wink

No - we're moving into another cycle of expansionism featuring Russia and Chine in addition to the jihad being conducted worldwide by radical Muslim elements, and this time America is too tired and too broke to stop it, and the rest of the world is too apathetic and complacent to defend themselves until it is too late.

No...it's a clear case of a realistic outlook trumping all of the propaganda spewing forth from governments everywhere.

Optimists throughout history have gotten huge numbers of people killed by failing to recognize reality when they see it.

england france and germany they were enemy in past and they make ww1 and ww2 but now they live in pace they work together if they can do this why in middle east people can't here people all work against each other they forgot they can spend the money to have better life rather than making war and buying weapon

the 2 thing is basic reason of war here

1 unsettled things after fall of major power . after fall of ottoman and soviet so many thing remain unsettled so new independent country have so many problem with each other
2 government propaganda

First of all, I am the one who is not sure

Secondly, you are looking very pessimistic

Two advice
*World doesn't change as fast as young people wish

*Not all bad things are pure bad, not all good things are pure good

*If topic is about humans, it has simple explanation

These countries don't have normal borders. The borders of middle east were drawn by UK and France so there is no local opinions

Even Europe after two great war which made all world a battlefield, they(big brothers in Europe) solved many border issue but still they have problems; Falkland, Gibralter, Bretons, Basque, Catalans

Greece-Pavlos Fissas:Killed Musician

One of these countries is not well known with human right, the other one is home of democracy and more then 30 years in EU, but results are same

When one gets into the OIL WARS, maybe some one should mention that the USA has more oil/natural gas reserves than any area of the world, but we, would rather continue to import Oil from counties which hate us!

Part of this problem is due to our current president and a past Vice President!

Look you guys, "Climate Change" is a real "HISTORICAL" event! It will happen again, and again! Do not blame modern man for producing these weather problems. Just whom was blamed for the numerous mass destructions of the past seemingly caused by the weather? HUH?

It seems that in the 1970's there were "doom and gloom" experts who actually predicted a "NEW ICE AGE" in action by the year 2014!!!!!

Oh! By the way, they are back again!

HA!, HA!

OH! It looks like the Ice Caps, at both of our poles is either about normal or above it! The Polar Bears are safe it seems to kill seals, ravage garbage dumps, etc., for another year! God bless us all!

Please see this!

My post was to agree with red clay, in that those of us born in post WW2 years have seen it all before. Spotfires ignite here and there, and are then extinguished. Some countries restructure and overcome both internal and external problems, others will never come to terms with history, be it religious or political. Mikhail Gorbachev coined a word, "Glasnost" to describe a new era of openness, a big step for Russia at the time. It is this openness in the Information Age that permits us a better insight to how political leaders think and why they act on certain issues. Who could ever imagined fifty years ago that the US would openly admit to spying on not only adversaries, but also allies. The wheel turns slowly, but it turns with certainty.

Since I worked for the U.S Government for 28 years, I think I can project some information!

Governmental departments all try to spend as much money as possible each and every year! Note, if they did not spend at least as much budgeted they would get their budget cut the next year.

So, the leaders and shakers would spend vast sums upon stupid things.

But my wife calls and I must now depart.

Yep, and the operation required to separate the optic nerve from the large intestine is called an Optrectomy.
