Discrimination against single people.

For all I am a family man, I frequently take holidays on my own when going fishing or whatever.

Thanks for the link.  I have just spoken to them. There is a membership fee, of course, but in addition to actively campaigning against these discriminations, they also offer to members a free legal service from a very experienced and well qualified solicitor. As a lawyer, albeit somewhat specialised, I recognise the value of this so may well subscribe.  Apparently, another discrimination against singles that is quite commonplace, is that they are often given accommodation that is not as good as that provided to couples. They told me that they have several thousand members both here and abroad, but would not divulge details of their membership numbers in my location.

There is a way around this sort of thing.  Determine what hotel chains you will likely use, then establish a "business account".

As business travelers account for 2/3's of most hotels normal traffic, they don't mess with them as much, if at all. By my experience, I will try to book at a "Windham" hotel.[US]  They do everything they can to accommodate the single business traveler.  You don't have to tell them your just in town for the "sequined jock strap festival." From what I can gather from the Single Tourist Action Centres website, they appear to be campaigning more for the lone personal holidaymaker since it is they who will pay for these surcharges themselves. The business traveller who may well still be charged these extras will inevitably be able to claim them back on expenses anyway.  If you book a cruise or a touring holiday on your own, you will inevitably have to pay these whacking extra charges merely because you are holidaying on your own.
