THE CONQUEST OF ISTANBUL

*THIS DAY IN HISTORY
*The Conquest of Istanbul
*Date: The 29th of May 1453
*Place: Istanbul , Ottoman Turkey
*Elapsed Time: Day for Day: 560 Years
*Main historic Figure: Sultan Mohamed Fatih.

It will be worth recalling that the city of Istanbul or Constantinople as it was known before the Conquest was sieged several times in History by different nations such as the Persians, Greeks ,Romans , Avars, Bulgarians ,Russians and Latins who have tried in vain to conquer this strategic city.

The Muslim Arabs sieged the city seven times but were not successful, followed by another seven sieges during the Ottoman Empire as recounted in Ottoman history from the Sultan Yildirim Bayazid in 1391 AD until the seventh and final siege that was carried out under the command of Mehmet II or Mohamed Al Fatih as he is historically known.

Mohamed Al Fatih was born on the 29th of March 1432 in Edirne , so he was exactly 21 years & two months old the day of the conquest; he was the son of Sultan Murad II. His mother was Huma Hatun. He was a tall, strong and muscular man. Mohamed Al Fatih was a statesman and a military leader.

He was also interested in literature, fine arts and monumental architecture. He was educated by the famous scholar Aksemseddin, furthermore Mohamed II spoke seven languages fluently, and adding to his worthy tribute is the famous portrait of him by Gentile Bellini.

For Mohamed Al Fatih, the conquest of Byzantium had a special significance as the Ottomans had spread on both continents, in Europe they had reached to Danube; the capital had been moved to Edirne in Europe , and therefore the obstacles that prevented the unism of the lands on the two continents had to be removed.

Mohamed Al Fatih thoroughly prepared plans for the conquest and in order to keep the straits of the Bosphorous safe and to cut out any help that may reach Byzantium  , he built a tower on the European  side just opposite the one on the Anatolian side , in parallel to the D day attack ships and canons were built in Gelibolu.

Realizing that unless the Golden Horn was sieged the city would not fail and in trying to enter the Golden Horn, the big chains that closed the golden horn prevented the Ottoman ships from going in , so all efforts to break the chains were in vain , here came a very unique warfare tactic that is still the subject of Army strategic Analysts , as Mohamed Al Fatih ordered that the ships numbered 72 are to be carried by cows and balanced by hundreds of Soldiers via ropes and  slid on wheels, and  be brought into the Golden Horn by way of land , hence on the afternoon of the 22nd of April 1453 ,the ships were inside the well protected Byzantine bay !!!

Such high profile military tactic created panic among the Byzantine army and were just dumbfounded and horrified when they saw Ottoman galleys moving down on the hills, for sure it was a deep moral blow to the Constantinople defenders as it has weakened the defense of the land fortresses.

The Teacher of Mohamed Al Fatih, Molla Husrev reminded the Young Sultan of the Words of The Beloved Prophet Mohamed (P.B.U.H):

“Constantinople will definitely be conquered, that Commander who conquers Byzantium is a Noble conqueror and his Soldiers are Noble Soldiers.”

Such driving force words significantly encouraged Mohamed Al Fatih and gave him a tremendous boost as well as to his Brave Soldiers and on the 29th of May 1453 Al Fatih gave the order to attack, the Ottoman army launched its final assault accompanied by Commemoration of Almighty Allah “Takbir” and beats of drums, meanwhile the Young Ottoman Soldier “Ulubatli Hassan” who first erected the Ottoman flag on Byzantine land fortress was Martyred , towards noon the Young Sultan entered the city on a white horse the people of Constantinople were applauding and the Ottoman troops were  praying and praising Allah for such a promised Victory !!!

The conquest of Istanbul has had such a great Historical impact on the Ottoman Empire and the Muslim World to the degree that some Historians demarcate the end of the Middle Ages with the city’s Conquest and it has enabled the Ottoman Muslims to take dynamic roles in shaping international politics much to the  European Christendom’s  chagrin.

As for this unique model and Charismatic Young Sultan Al Fatih, who ruled the Ottoman Empire for 30 years and joined 25 campaigns himself. He was a very strict statesman, a very brave soldier and above all a God- Fearing Man. He took place in front of his army in the wars and he encouraged his soldiers in different situations, showing them how to serve faithfully Islam and the Ummah, the Sultan had died on the 3rd of May 1481 at the age of 49. He was buried in "Fatih Turbesi" (tomb), near the Mosque of Fatih in Istanbul , May Almighty God have Mercy on his soul and make the Great Heaven his dwelling.

The first name of this city was Byzantium (Latin) or Βυζάντιον (Byzantion) in Greek. It was founded in the 7th century BC.
αἰὲν ἀριστεύειν
Een aristevin
“Ever to Excel“
From Homer's Iliad (8th century BC).
Motto of the University of St Andrews (founded 1410), the Edinburgh Academy (founded 1824) and others.

Yeah. Technically when Constantine built his city it was slightly to the east of the original Byzantion but obviously you can still call it the same city.

*Technically, first settlements before the Byzantion is Semistra and Lygos which are Thracian cities.

*"The early modern period is often considered to have begun with such events as the beginning of the High Renaissance in Italy; the invention of moveable type printing in the 1450s; the Fall of Constantinople in 1453; the end of the Wars of the Roses in 1485; the Voyages of Christopher Columbus and the completion of the Reconquista in 1492 or the start of the Protestant Reformation in 1517"

We Turks, take the Conquest of Istanbul for the beginning of this period.

It is not a proper incident. Ottoman Empire didn't declare war. There were two German battle ships which tried to escape British Armada. They came to Ottoman, but Ottoman Empire didn't suppose to allow it. Ottoman took the ships as own ships and told "we bought them from Germany".  Changed the names and then sent them to Blacksea to bombard Russian ports. After that Russia declared war against Ottoman. This is the story of how the Ottoman Empire enters the WW1

This was not Sultan's plan. It was plan of some guys in Committee of Union and Progress. They were the biggest party in parliament in that period. Sultan was planing to stay away from the war. Empire has just gotton out of the war(Balkan Wars-1912-13) and also he was British supporter, not German

Facism and ultra nationalism are not something which you should ignore.  Exclamation

I know that Golden Dawn has just 5-10% of general votes. But this news is nearly in  all Turkish news such as our one of the top Turkish new source, Hurriyet Daily

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also don't understand why the Turks celebrate just the conquest. The first settlement also needs to be honoured.

For example: A symbolic Thracian guy, Byzas, Costantine and II. Mehmet statues will be great in same square.

Note: Poseidon statue also will be awesome. He was the main god of early Byzantion

lets change the subjects Big smile i always wanted to know what was the structure of ottoman army b4 the Janissaries what was your units how many men every unit have ......... u know our unit and army is little different from later ottoman army but we should have similar army in the of seljuks era am i right ?? well our turkmen army at least have similarity with tabriz and baku turks

ofc  we have 3 main untis archer cavalry and infantry

vurshak : this is body of our army vur means hit vursh means fight/battle/war similar to savash in turkish and vurshak means fighter this is our infantry and light cavalry and we can have any type of them for expl paltale vurshak means axemen or khalajle vurshak means swordmen

mergen : we have both archer and horse archer but elite of them will be call as mergen which means the men who never miss a shot !!! every archer or horse archer who get this rank will be known as great warrior later they known as  gunner and sniper in modern days

ghuchan or ghawchan : well we have light cavalry known as atle vurshak which means horsemen  but our elite cavalry is ghuchan this is so hard to translate to english i think u get what is it's means u know it's something like this " the raiders who is in charging "

kizilbash : this is big reform to make better elite army u know the rest Tongue

ok in every unit we have 100 men in 10 line and in every line we have 10 men  the lowest rank is on bashi which means head of 10 on bashi's duty is
to keep the line and take care of his men so as i said we have 10 line this means we have 10 on bashi in every unit after on bashi we have eldi bashi and yuz bashi which means head of 50 and head of 100 . yuz bashi is a lider of a unit and eldi bashi is second in command

so every unti of our  ghuchan mergen and vurshak works like that after yuz bashi we have bash yuz and min bashi(bin in istanbul turkish) which means head of 500 and head of 1000  making this rank is depend of size of army if u have big army than u can have this rank min bashis have 10 yuz bashi under their commands after min bashi we have bayragh bash " head of banner " or better say banner men bayragh bashis are commanded by skill commander or beg but beg's rank is higher than bayragh bashi begs can command several bayragh bashi this depend of what city or state they rule  after this we have beglan begi " beg of begs" this is
second in command after turkmenbashi and will chose by turkmen bashi . turkmenbashi " head of turkmens" or better say king the highest rank of our army Wink
