Could it be that everything is about money, and the individuals that serve in our federal government are nothing but low down opportunists? The 16.4 Trillion Dollar debt, where is that going? Is our impending bankruptcy due to the corruption of both political parties?

What is your definition of "corrupt"?
"Arguing with someone who hates you or your ideas, is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter what move you make, your opponent will walk all over the board and scramble the pieces".
Unknown.

Taking money, whether for themselves or for their families and friends, as payment for their votes.

I guess the point is, why do politicians make the choices they make, often against the will of the majority of Americans? Are they receiving some benefit because they decided to back a certain bill?

True. As an example, why did the Repubs cave on the debt ceiling, even though we seem to be spending ourselves into an eternal hell? Could it be that the system financially favors the leaders of both political parties so much that they don't want to interrupt the flow of wealth into their own coffers?

Because most politicians are psychopaths (medical term) who feel no emotion and as thus are incapable of feeling remorse or empathy. The only thing that is expedient for a psychopath is promoting ones interests and fullfilling one's needs even if this means that others get hurt. Simple as that.
