Sadly Clive Dunn (Corporal Jones) died yesterday at the age of 90. He starred in a popular TV show about the WWII Home Guard tasked with defending Britain from Nazi invasion with obsolete or improvised weapons. Recruits included men who were disabled, too old or too young to enlist in the regular army, and workers in reserved occupations.
A selection of Home Guard weapons. The sticky bomb was designed to be slapped onto the side of a German tank, but was badly designed and often fell off the handle and stuck to the soldier's feet http://www.home-guard.org.uk/hg/spec.html
In the early years of the war there weren't enough rifles to go round. Many home guard personnel armed themselves with shotguns, pitchforks, golf clubs, and broom handles
My Grandad was in the 'Homeguard' and loved 'Dads Army' and thought 'many a true word in jest'.
One day on a walk with the dog --- a beautiful Staffie named Tessie-- I talked to my Grandmother about it and she said oh yes but she also remembers the night that word came that 'It' was happening.
He picked his shot gun and catridges "Well this is it old gal" kissed her and took the dog -- a feking huge Staffie called Cambo--- and with his best friend and next door neighbour marched off to meet the Nazi invader.
He was of the opinion he stood no chance but he wasn't going to give in.
My Grandmother spent the longest night of her life clutchering her children and he butchers knife.
