Dokdo is a Korean word and Takeshima is Japanese word.
Both are same island.

Nowadays, Japanese government and Japanese rightists claim that Dokdo(Takeshima) as Japanese territory. If you study history in depth, Doko(Takeshima) is 100% Korean territory.
Japaneses simply want to steal territory from Korea. That's all.

Interesting analysis. Did you write the essay you link?

It's a debate that have been going on for a long time. Both sides are using different historical pieces to justify their claim. While Korea has stronger claim over the island due to the fact that their sea trades in the seas developed earlier than their counterpart thanks to Chinese influence, this debate is really meaningless in the overall scheme of things. The fact that earlier Korean dynasties occupied the island does not justify their claim in modern era, especially due to the size of the island and the fact tha it's occupied by few South Korean troops.

It's just the matter of who wants the island more badly. Both ROK and Japan's nationalism forces both government to demand their claim as that's the only thing that's politically acceptable to both parties. I think it made the West very difficult to give Dokdo to Japan especially after the troubles the Japanese Empire gave to Brits and Americans after WWII. Korean Navy has been improving supported by their emerging economy. (They aim for Blue Water capability by 2020) Japan's powerful navy is politically unacceptable to the West.

So Korea gets the island unless something happens in the future. (Ex. Japan deveops their own navy without any restrictions and/or massive oil reseve discovery)

BTW, was there a prize for this essay contest?

All land claims everywhere in the world always turn into a mire of gargantuan proportions, since usually the both sides have claims with the same validity, depending how far in time one is willing to go; so those claims smolder for years, not to say more, feeding into various nationalist agendas, and being a seed for pernicious acts and thoughts. In the great scheme of things it's not so important who got a handful of dirt more, but who learned how to get along with their neighbours, and land claims are usually the worse occasions that ruin the chances of successful getting along together. That's why I see no value in claims like that - and usually the side that wins wins not because their claim is "just" but because they are in better political position to browbeat the other to give them what they want.

I'd say - forget all claims, forget what happen way back when, and try to make sense of living now with what you've got - to all nations and cultures everywhere. But of course, this is only a wishful thinking on my side, no? /bitter smile/

Screaming, in re your: " If you study history in depth, Doko(Takeshima) is 100% Korean territory.
Japaneses simply want to steal territory from Korea. That's all."

I know people who've studied the Dokto issue in depth and judged Japan as having the stronger claim. Perhaps the world court can decide the issue?

There's also been a very strong movement among Koreans to rename the Sea of Japan.

There's even been a recent petition to change the name that's been forwarded to Obama.
