Since world war two I'm pushed to think of an example of them defending my freedom. I fact since Iraq and Afghanistan thanks to draconian anti-terror laws I feel positively less free.
 
 
Hang on a moment, Bradley Manning , Ok at least one has tried to defend freedom.
