Nothing ever really changes....
''If you wanted to get ahead in Iron-Age Central Europe you would use a strategy that still works today -- dress to impress and throw parties with free alcohol. Pre-Roman Celtic people practiced what archaeologist Bettina Arnold calls "competitive feasting," in which people vying for social and political status tried to outdo one another through power partying.''
I had read about similar customs among the Native Americans and some Pacific islands natives - the chief is obliged to make feasts and spread what he had accumulated among the members of the tribe. It seems to be a custom that levels the material accumulations in a social group, something like our welfare.
The Romans had the custom of "patronige" - some wealthy Romans were the patrons of poor ones, and the poor ones went to their patron's houses to have dinner, and take the food scraps home, so they feed their families.
Chookie or the General can probably help us with the Highland or Irish clans. I found this Elizabethan image online where the chieftain provides his tribe with a meat boiled in a cauldron made of skins
