To some extent this was still being practices in the clan system in Scotland until at least a good part of the eighteenth century I think.

I had read about similar customs among the Native Americans and some Pacific islands natives - the chief is obliged to make feasts and spread what he had accumulated among the members of the tribe. It seems to be a custom that  levels the material accumulations in a social group, something like our welfare.

The Romans had the custom of "patronige" - some wealthy Romans were the patrons of poor ones, and the poor ones went to their patron's houses to have dinner, and take the food scraps home, so they feed their families.

Chookie or the General can probably help us with the Highland or Irish clans. I found this Elizabethan image online where the chieftain provides his tribe with a meat boiled in a cauldron made of skins
