1836 - Texas abolishes slavery

I'm perplexed by this one entry: Texas, a slave state until 1865, abolishes slavery.
In 1836 Texas had an estimated population of 38,470, only 5,000 of whom were slaves. The Texas Revolution assured slaveholders of the future of their institution. The Constitution of the Republic of Texas (1836) provided that slaves would remain the property of their owners, that the Texas Congress could not prohibit the immigration of slaveholders bringing their property, and that slaves could be imported from the United States (although not from Africa). Given those protections, slavery expanded rapidly during the period of the republic.

Yes, I think this was bad wording - on March 17 Texas abolishes the slave trade, not slavery per se. On March 17, 1836, Texas prohibited the slave trade, but according to the Constitution of Texas, article #9:
"...All persons of color who were slaves for life before coming to Texas shall remain so. Congress shall pass no laws to forbid emigrants to the state to bring slaves with them, and hold them for the same tenure by which slaves were hold in the United States...the importation or admission of Africans or Negroes in this republic, excepting for the United States of America, is prohibited, and declared to be piracy..."

Sorry for not seeing it, and thank you for pointing it out, TJSmile!
